The Development trend in Hypnosis
Intense debate surrounds the topic of hypnosis. Some scientist disputes its very existence, while many therapists insist upon its value. One potential source of controversy is the wide variety of theories of hypnosis. This controversy may be decreasing as the value of hypnosis is increasingly recognized.
It is believed by many hypnotherapists that the next decade will bring increased attention to mind/body relationships and how hypnosis can be most effectively employed in this area. It is felt that the use of hypnoanesthesia for surgery would be ideal in third world and developing countries. There will be increased interest in the use of hypnosis in self-care, in the forensic area, and in the use of self-hypnosis by the general population.
Scientific hypnosis has made great advances, both as part of basic psychological science concerned with the understanding of brain, mind and personality and as a professional skill, in which knowledge of hypnosis is used to serve human welfare by enhancing the quality of life for those who have the good fortune to benefit from hypnotherapy and the related practice of hypnoanalysis.
A growing group of devoted researchers and teachers has been trying to keep hypnosis on an even keel, out of the newspapers and away from sensationalism. Unfortunately, recent years have again seen a resurgence of teaching groups whose prerequisites for training in hypnosis are low and whose standards are questionable. Some may be able to provide adequate training in hypnotherapy, but many are not.
The growing sophistication in the exercise of hypnosis makes its future promising in numerous areas, from research to clinical practice. In the increasing volume of papers dealing with hypnosis there is widening medical and public acceptance of its therapeutic potential.
Today hypnosis appears to be firmly implanted as a medical tool, and its future is likely to witness its progressive maturation in its varied application to the spectrum of medical practice.
