How does hypnosis work?

What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is nothing more than a very relaxed state of mind. It is similar to the relaxed state you are in just before you go to sleep at night, and first thing in the morning when you have just woken up, but have not opened your eyes.

It can also be described as a sleep state, however it is different to the sleep you have at night. When you sleep at night it is an unconscious sleep, in other words you are not aware that you sleeping. Hypnosis is not the same as the sleep you have at night.

The sleep state you are in while in hypnosis is a very relaxed sleep where you are fully aware of everything that goes on around you. While in hypnosis you’ll be able to think, talk, and open your eyes at anytime.

When you are daydreaming or concentrating you are also in a state of hypnosis.

In the hypnotic state the mind is more able to concentrate, imagine and remember. This is why when you are in the relaxed state of hypnosis; the mind will accept patterns of thinking that enables behavior modification or change.

Because of the relaxed state of hypnosis, peripheral awareness reduces and focal attention increases. This in turn increases your concentration and when you concentrate better you develop exquisite receptivity.

It is definitely not a loss of control but really an exercise in greater control. Hypnosis is not something a hypnotist does to do. You do it to yourself. It is the product of your inclination, not the hypnotist will.
